VTnet 2008

VTnet is a software package written at Virginia Tech and distributed on CD-ROM and online (see below). VTnet should be obtained and run on your computer before plugging into the network. VTnet automatically runs and performs the following functions for you:

  • Helps obtain Internet access by configuring your Ethernet or modem.
  • Helps secure your computer from computer hacks and viruses.
  • Helps in configuring your e-mail client to use Virginia Tech.
  • Provides a collection of software packages for current Virginia Tech students or for University owned computers.

VTnet does the following things on a PC:

  1. Adds a root certificate to Internet Explorer to set Virginia Tech as a trusted site.
  2. Turns on the Windows Vista/XP Firewall or a IPSEC Firewall for Windows 2000, whenever you run the VTnet CD.
  3. Installs a group of VBScript utility tools in a folder on your c: drive. For use if you have problems later.
  4. Adds a group of bad web address to the Internet Explorer "restricted sites" and adds "learn.vt.edu" (Blackboard) to the Internet Explorer "trusted sites".
  5. Turns on the automatic Windows Update to run every night at 12:00 AM. Also tries to run a Windows Update when the VTnet CD is run, whenever you run the VTnet CD.
  6. Checks for AntiVirus software and tries to install Symantec Endpoint Protection.
  7. Tries to install Microsoft's Windows Defender software on Windows Vista/XP.
  8. Tries to install Spybot Search & Destroy software on Windows 2000.
  9. Tries to define the wireless network(VT_WLAN) so that your computer can use the wireless network on-campus. You must register to use wireless, see: http://www.cns.vt.edu/html/wireless/wlan/registration.html
  10. Scans to determine if the network connection is working and records this information in the registry keys.
  11. Sets your network connect to use DHCP, saves the current IP address if currently configured to use a static address in the registry keys.
  12. Tries to assist you in creating backup data of your computer.
  13. Creates two desktop icons, MY VT and Computer Security.

VTnet does the following things on a Mac:

  1. Helps you install Symantec Antivirus 10.2.0.
  2. Helps you setup your firewall, install security updates, install the VT root certificate, setup your email, etc.
  3. Provides links to documentation on Boot Camp and Parallels.


The VTnet CD also contains the following additional programs:
  • Set up your network connection
  • Configure your e-mail software
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.2000.1567 (PC)
  • Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.14 (web browser)
  • Eudora 7.1.0.9 (e-mail) on PC and Eudora 6.2.4 on MAC
  • SpyBot 1.4 (PC only)

    Online versions:

    Both the PC and Mac versions can be obtain online. The online versions do not contain any licensed software. Both versions require PID and password login. Save the PC version to your desktop and then double-click the vtnet.exe to begin execution. The Mac version simply displays in your current browser.
